The Best of Southwest: Where We’re Eating in Roanoke
Roanoke has always been on the foodie map, but in 2025, it’s seriously having a moment. With deep Appalachian roots and a ton of creativity from local chefs, this mountain town—and spots like Salem, Vinton, and beyond—have something for everyone. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee, a cocktail, or a bite at a neighborhood favorite, the Roanoke Valley is teeming with good food, good drinks, and even better people. Here’s your updated guide to some of my favorite places to eat, drink, and hang out!

BREAKFAST & BRUNCH SPOTS
Bread Craft (24 Church Avenue SW, Roanoke, VA 24011)
The perfect place to grab fresh, locally made bread—everything from classic baguettes to their incredible sourdough (my personal favorite). The café is quaint and cozy, and starting your morning with a breakfast sandwich and a cup of Red Rooster coffee will have you floating on cloud nine all day long.
Scratch Biscuit Co. (1820 Memorial Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
Scratch is fast-paced, a bit hectic, and absolutely worth it. Located in Grandin Village, it’s one of my favorite spots to grab a massive, buttery biscuit and soak up some sunshine on the patio (weather permitting, of course). If I’m feeling fancy, I choose the “Bless Your Heart”—especially during tomato season. However, on most days, I prefer a classic bacon, egg, and cheese. Don’t skip the hashbrowns or kettle chips either! If you’re interested in trying something new, they offer rotating monthly specials—April’s is a loaded brunch burger with guacamole, pico, bacon, cheddar, and a sunny-side-up egg. Their specials always hit!

Donnie D’s Bagels (3239 Brandon Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24018)
Donnie D’s in Roanoke is serving up the kind of New York-style bagels this city didn’t know it needed. Freshly made daily, with an unbelievable lineup of house-made cream cheeses that are impossible to choose between (scallion is my personal favorite). You can order ahead, dine in, or swing through the drive-thru if you’re on the go. Whether you’re grabbing a classic bagel with a schmear or one of their stacked breakfast sandwiches, you really can’t go wrong. It’s my go-to weekend stop—and honestly, the best cure for any kind of morning!
Our Daily Bread (1003 S Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA & 3334 Brambleton Ave, Roanoke, VA)
Our Daily Bread in Roanoke is one of my favorite spots to slow down and treat myself, because I’m always going sweet over savory here. Strawberry Nutella crepes? Pumpkin waffles? Say less. They’ve also got weekend brunch specials and seasonal drinks that hit the spot. It’s the perfect place to round up your friends, catch up over coffee!
Scrambled (32 Market SQ, Roanoke, VA 24011)
Scrambled is a great breakfast spot located inside the Historic Roanoke City Market Building! They offer both indoor and outdoor dining on their spacious garden patio! They are open six days a week and take reservations, making it easy to plan your visit. Whether you’re starting your day, exploring downtown, shopping at the farmers market, or recovering from a night out, Scrambled has you covered!

LUNCH & DINNER SPOTS
Brood Restaurant and Bar (210 E. Main Street, Salem, VA)
Brood opened in 2023 and spiced up downtown Salem with its creative take on Southern dishes. My go-tos include: Pimento & Pickles, Caesar salad, Braised Beef Short Rib, or the Everything-Spiced Salmon—depending on my vibe. And if Steve’s behind the bar, his Old Fashioned and Manhattan are a must. They’re open Tues–Thurs 5–10 PM, Fri until 11 PM, and Saturdays for brunch and dinner. It’s one of my go-to spots for a date night!
Show Pony (1314 Grandin Road SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
Show Pony… where do I even begin? Roanoke has needed a place like this for so long. It’s cozy, eclectic, and full of magic—the kind of spot where you can truly be yourself. They don’t take reservations (yet), but with the buzz they’ve had since opening, they might need to. From the French onion dip to the rotating entrée specials and craft cocktails made by some seriously talented bartenders, everything here just hits. “Cold drinks and hot plates” isn’t just their motto—it’s the whole vibe!
Wildflour Restaurant & Bakery (2143 Colonial Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
Wildflour is a Roanoke staple! It’s cozy, unfussy, and always hits the spot. I’m loyal to the Blackened Chicken Quesadilla (with a side of guac & chips), but the BLT is always a solid move. And I would never leave without a brownie!

Fortunato (104 Kirk Avenue SW, Roanoke, VA)
Fortunato is hands-down one of my favorite spots in Roanoke! It’s the region’s only traditional Italian kitchen and Neapolitan-style pizzeria, and the quality is unmatched. I usually start with an espresso martini or one of their seasonal craft cocktails, then go for the burrata, a classic margarita pizza, or the lumache al forno. The open kitchen adds a unique touch, and the atmosphere is warm, romantic, and unforgettable. You’ll fall in love before the first bite!
Lucky Restaurant (18 Kirk Ave SW, Roanoke, VA)
When I think of sexy restaurants in Roanoke, I think of Lucky. The lighting is low, the vibe is intimate, and everything feels effortlessly cool. It’s perfect for date night or a slow dinner with friends where the food, drinks, and conversation get the spotlight. The menu rotates with the season, but no matter what’s on it, everything is thoughtful and full of flavor. And the cocktails? Life-changing—thanks to Brandon Sweetenberg, the “Service Well Savant” behind the bar. His craft is literal magic. Lucky isn’t just good—it’s unforgettable!
The River and Rail (2201 Crystal Spring Ave, Roanoke, VA)
The River and Rail is all about quality—from locally sourced meats and produce to fresh seafood from the coast every week. Farm to table, coast to kitchen—they make the most of Virginia’s best. The menu changes often, so calling ahead to see what’s cooking is a must. No matter what’s on, it’s guaranteed to be thoughtful, seasonal, and seriously delicious!

Tuco’s Taqueria (416 Salem Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24016)
Tuco’s is where the tacos are bold, the margs are strong, and the vibes are just right. Tucked in the funky part of downtown—right across from Big Lick and next to Golden Cactus—it’s the perfect stop for a night out. The Hillbilly Taco is my forever fave, but their build-your-own and specialty tacos always keep things interesting. Don’t sleep on the apps. And if it’s Margarita Monday, I’m ordering a top-shelf coconut marg and living my best life!
Sidecar (411 1st St SW, Roanoke, VA 24011)
Sidecar knows how to do a happy hour—every Thursday from 5–8 PM, their Martini & Frites special is the move. It’s giving classic, a little indulgent, and the perfect midweek treat. But the drinks don’t stop there—their cocktail menu is full of craft creations and old-world favorites, and everything is made with intention. The food? Just as impressive with small bites to full entrées, you cannot go wrong with this menu. Whether you’re in for a quick drink or the whole dinner experience, Sidecar always delivers!
Evie’s Bistro (1212 4th St SW, Roanoke, VA 24016)
Evie’s is the quintessential neighborhood spot, tucked away in the sweetest little corner of Old Southwest. Going here is a whole experience. From the eclectic, one-of-a-kind decor to the cozy, it feels like stepping into a hidden gem. My go-to orders are the BLT or the Pimento Smash Burger, but honestly, everything’s good. And the cake? Truly the best in Roanoke. Save room—you’ll regret it if you don’t!
Pancho Mexican Restaurant (682 Brandon Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
Pancho’s is one of my comfort spots. I always go for the arroz con pollo—it never misses—and you’ll dream about the bean dip. It’s the kind of meal that sparks joy! They also do half-off margaritas on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 5 to 9, which is a fun bonus. But honestly, I’d go just for the food!
The Village Grill (1802 Memorial Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
The Village Grill is the ultimate chill hangout spot in Grandin! They’ve got great weekly specials, and an even better outdoor seating area, and during the spring, summer, and fall, you can almost catch live music. It’s also a go-to spot for watching your favorite team. If you’re sharing apps, don’t skip the “When You Dip, I Dip, We Dip”—a trio of buffalo chicken, shrimp, and collard green dips served with chips. Perfect for splitting… or not!
Jaybird Tavern (120 Luck Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24011)
Jaybird Tavern is one of Roanoke’s newer spots! You can’t go wrong with their monthly pizza specials—they’re creative, crispy, and always delicious. The wings and apps are just as good, and if you’re not drinking, their lavender lemonade (half lemon, lavender syrup, and sparkling water) is the perfect refresher. It’s a great place to catch up with friends or even for a low-key first date!
Martin’s Downtown (413 1st St SW, Roanoke, VA 24011)
Martin’s is hands-down my favorite place in Roanoke. It’s part restaurant, part bar, part music venue—and 100% the place to be any night of the week. They’re always hosting amazing live artists, and their burger of the month is consistently on point. My personal go-to? The soul rolls. If you know, you know. Add in daily drink specials and a fun, social atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why Martin’s is my forever favorite spot to eat, hang out, and catch live music.
Fork in the Alley (2123 Crystal Spring Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24014)
Fork in the Alley is one of those tucked-away Roanoke spots that feels like a local secret. My go-to order? Fried green beans and a cold IPA—simple and perfect every time. Their wood-fired pizzas and burgers are always delicious. And if you know, you know: Forkapalooza is their yearly celebration, and it’s a whole thing. Live music, good food, good beer—it’s one of those places that’s just easy to love.
Mama Jean’s BBQ (3404 Brandon Ave SW, Roanoke, 24018)
Mama Jean’s is, hands down, the best BBQ in Roanoke. They’re currently serving out of a food truck while they renovate their permanent space, but the food isn’t lacking. The menu stays pretty consistent, with a few fun surprises each week. I’m all about the birria tacos and banana pudding—they’re unreal. They were even featured in Southern Living because, of course, they were. Pro tip: follow them on Instagram for daily updates—it’s the best way to know what’s cooking and when they sell out (which happens fast).
Taco Riendo (5316 Williamson Rd, Roanoke, VA 24012)
Taco Riendo is my go-to for tacos in Roanoke—no question. I always get the chicken tacos with Cotija cheese, lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream on a corn tortilla. The menu is authentically Mexican, and everything on it is good. If you know, you know!
The Green Goat (802 Wiley Drive SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
The Green Goat is one of those places that always feels like a good idea. Located right on the greenway in Wasena, it’s perfect for a post-walk lunch, casual dinner, or just splitting apps with friends. When it comes to appetizers, you can’t go wrong with the eggplant fries, hummus platter, deviled eggs, or their homemade chips and dip—they’re all out of this world. I also love the Greenway Girl spinach salad, the fried green BLT, and the pimento grilled cheese. And if you’re wondering what to try first, my Granny swears by the French onion soup, and she’s not wrong. It’s cozy, classic, and always hits the mark.
Food Hut (214 5th St SW, Roanoke, VA 24016)
The Food Hut keeps it casual, but the food is anything but. Tucked beside Golden Cactus Brewery, it’s the perfect stop whether you’re brunching or grabbing dinner. I go straight for the chicken and waffles, crispy, golden perfection that I think about way too often, or the smash burger, which honestly holds its own against any in town. It’s low-key, flavorful, and feels like a win every time.
DESSERT, SWEETS & BAKERIES
Blue Cow Ice Cream Co. (1115 Piedmont St SE, Roanoke, VA 24014)
Blue Cow is my go-to when I’m craving something sweet. Their ice cream flights are perfect if you want to try a little bit of everything (which you do), and I love that you can grab a pint to go for later. My favorite flavor? Chocolate Raspberry Truffle—rich, fruity, and so good. Whether you’re stopping by after dinner or need a pick-me-up, Blue Cow is there for you!

Rookies (3549 Electric Road, Cave Spring, VA 24018)
Rookie’s is the place that brings out your inner kid, in the best way. The ice cream sandwiches are nostalgic, over-the-top delicious, and completely customizable. My go-to? The Sprinkle Cookie with birthday cake ice cream. You can build your own or go for a flight if you want to try a little bit of everything (which you do). The staff is top-notch, super friendly, and always patient while I try to decide. It’s fun, sweet, and puts a smile on your face!
Poser Bakes (Pop-Up)
If you want to try Poser Bakes, you have to follow them on Instagram and get to their pop-ups early—things sell out fast and for a good reason. Every item is creative, seasonal, and delicious. From miso banana bread to almond croissants and Earl Grey morning buns, it’s the kind of baked good you daydream about later. You can usually find them at Altar Coffee or occasionally on dessert menus around town, but trust me—getting something straight from the pop-up is the real win!
Bread Run (Pop-Up)
Bread Run is one of my absolute favorites. Their challah is soft and golden, and honestly, it doesn’t even make it a full day in my house—it’s that good. I’m also obsessed with their homemade granola. It’s the perfect mix of crunchy and just sweet enough. You can find them at local pop-ups, farmers markets, and the Roanoke Co-op. Pro tip: follow them on Instagram so you don’t miss where they’ll be next—they sell out fast!
Kind Baking Company (1107 Main Street SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
The Kind Baking Company just moved into their new spot right across from RND Coffee in Wasena, and it’s honestly perfect. I’m obsessed with their scones, brownies, cakes, and granola, made with clean ingredients, and you can taste the difference. Whether you’re swinging by for a quick treat or picking something up to share (or not, no judgment), you really can’t go wrong. Just get there early—things go fast for a reason.
COFFEE SHOPS
Altar Coffee (2825 Brambleton Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24015)
The best-kept coffee secret in Roanoke is Altar Coffee. Tucked inside Gladheart Wine & Brews, it’s a cozy little spot that feels like your own hidden gem. It’s also my favorite craft coffee in town. Their drinks are next-level, and what sets them apart is the Spring Sparkle—a signature sparkling espresso drink that’s become a staple on the menu. They make all their syrups in-house and put so much pride into the entire experience. They’re open Wednesday through Saturday, and once you go, you’ll wonder why you didn’t go sooner!

Sweet Donkey Coffee House (2108 Broadway Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24014)
Sweet Donkey is such a great spot to grab a coffee in Roanoke. It’s tucked into the Crystal Spring neighborhood inside a cozy old house, and their outdoor space is perfect when the weather’s nice. I usually go for the Moo Latte, and they’ve got a solid food menu too if you’re looking for something more. Whether you’re meeting up with friends or just need a change of scenery, Sweet Donkey is always a good choice!
RND Coffee (1114 Main St SW, Roanoke,VA and 101 E Washington Ave Vinton, VA 24179)
RND Coffee is one of my go-tos for a solid cup of coffee. I usually keep it simple with a plain drip or a Lemon Drop if I’m in the mood for something a little brighter—and I’m grabbing a muffin while I’m at it. They’ve got two locations, one in Wasena and one in Vinton, so it’s easy to stop by no matter where you are. The coffee is great, the space is relaxed, and it’s always a good choice!
Chris’s Coffee & Custard (1824 9th Street SE, Ste B, Roanoke, VA 24013)
Chris’s Coffee & Custard is one of my favorite feel-good spots in Roanoke. I’m all about their dirty chai and the chicken salad sandwich—such a good combo. And you have to get the custard while you’re there. Everything’s delicious, but what makes it even better is that they’re creating jobs and opportunities for people with disabilities. Great food, great mission, and an all-around great place to be.
WINE & COCKTAIL BARS
Well Hung Vineyard (402 S Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA 24011)
Well Hung Vineyard feels like a little piece of a vineyard right in downtown Roanoke. I’m all about their wine flights and seasonal slushies—they make it easy (and fun) to try something new. Their charcuterie boards are a must, especially if you want to stay and snack for a while. It’s casual, lively, and the perfect spot to kick back with friends or spend a lazy afternoon sipping and grazing!
The Vault (101 S Jefferson St, Roanoke, VA 24011)
The Vault is tucked inside the Liberty Trust Hotel and nails the atmosphere—moody, dark, and full of that luxurious, tucked-away vibe. Their espresso martini is one of my favorites in Roanoke—smooth, strong, and just the right amount of fancy. Whether you’re catching up with friends or just want to sink into a cozy corner with a great cocktail, The Vault is the move.
Six & Sky Rooftop Bar (1 Market Square SE, Roanoke, VA 24011)
Six and Sky is all about the view, and the food and drinks are just as good. It’s perched right on top of Center in the Square, and sitting out on the rooftop with a drink in hand never gets old. I’m usually ordering one of their sangria, plus the Caesar salad with a side of fries (and ranch, obviously). Sitting up there with that combo? Chef’s kiss. It’s the perfect spot for a laid-back night out with a little extra something.
Brady’s Distillery (711 Pocahontas Ave NE, Roanoke, VA 24012)
Brady’s Distillery has such a laid-back vibe, and it’s one of my favorite places to grab a drink. They opened in 2020 and make all their craft spirits—whiskey, bourbon, vodka, and rum—and you can taste the care they put into it. They’ve got a great indoor bar set up with plenty of TVs if you want to catch a game or whatever event’s going on, plus a nice outdoor space when the weather’s good. Whether I’m there for a cocktail or just hanging out with friends, Brady’s is always an easy choice!
BREWERIES
Big Lick Brewing Company (409 Salem Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24016)
Big Lick Brewing Company is just so fun. They’ve always got something going on—trivia nights, live music, pub runs—you name it. They also have a huge variety of craft beers, and my favorites are the Double White Bronco and the Open Secret. I love spending evenings there just hanging out and chatting with friends. You can even order food from Tuco’s, Food Hut, or Beamer’s and have it delivered right to your table. Between the bar, the activities, and the good vibes, Big Lick is just one of those places you never really want to leave.
Golden Cactus Brewing (214 5th St SW, Roanoke, VA 24016)
Golden Cactus = instant good vibes. The colors, the plants, the whole atmosphere—it’s honestly one of the most beautiful breweries in Roanoke. There are tons of indoor and outdoor seating, so it’s perfect whether you want to chill inside or hang out in the sun. They’ve got a big variety of games inside, plus corn hole outside, so there’s always something to do while you sip. It’s the kind of place where you show up for a beer and end up staying way longer than you planned—in the best way!

Old Salem Brewing Company (21 E Main St, Salem, VA 24153 and 315 Market St SE Roanoke, VA 24011)
Olde Salem Brewing Company keeps it fun, plain, and simple. Roanoke’s got the Market Street taproom, and Salem’s got the patio vibes—take your pick. I’m always ordering a Heartbroken in Disrepair and somehow getting talked into trivia, bingo, or a book swap. You’ll go for a beer and end up making a whole night of it—and honestly, that’s the best part. It’s the place that makes “just one drink” turn into your entire evening (in the best way).
Parkway Brewing Company (739 Kessler Mill Rd, Salem, VA 24153)
Parkway Brewing Company is easily my favorite brewery. The outdoor space is stunning, and the way the indoor area flows right into it makes it even better. Plus, it’s right on the greenway and close to some great hiking spots—perfect for a post-adventure beer. My move? Grabbing a Get Bent (any of the varieties, they’re all a win) and finding a spot to kick back. The vibe is carefree, colorful, and spot-on with what you want when kicking back with a beer!

Twisted Track Brewpub (523 Sheandoah Ave NW, Roanoke, VA 24016)
Twisted Track Brewpub is one of those places that’s just easy to love. Their outdoor seating is awesome, especially on a nice day. My go-to drinks are the Patriot Punch and the Walk-Off Raspberry Wheat—both are delightful. They keep things fun with live music, trivia nights, and an inviting atmosphere. Oh, and if you’re snacking, don’t skip the pretzel bites—they’re so good. It’s the perfect spot to hang out, grab a drink, and stay for a while!
