Top 5 Food Events in Virginia This July

Last Updated on June 25, 2026 by Liz Thomson

If June got festival season rolling, July is when it hits full stride. The tomatoes are finally ripe, the melons are heavy on the vine, and just about every town in the state seems to have an excuse to gather around a food truck and a cold drink. (It’s also when “just a quick trip outside” turns into an immediate need for shade and a lemonade, but that’s summer in Virginia for you.)

From a free hometown tomato celebration just outside Richmond to a waterfront taco takeover on the coast, here are five Virginia food events worth building a weekend around this July.

Hanover Tomato Festival

Mechanicsville – July 10–11, 2026

You can’t talk about July in Central Virginia without the Hanover tomato, and this beloved free festival at Pole Green Park is where the whole region shows up to celebrate it. Now in its 47th year, the event pairs nearly 100 vendors with two stages of live music, a kids’ area, and food that runs from the wonderfully on-theme to the classic.

This is the rare festival where the star ingredient really is the star. Expect tomato-forward dishes you won’t find anywhere else — think BLT hot dogs, chicken salad stuffed tomatoes, and even tomato basil cupcakes — alongside funnel cakes, kettle corn, and ice cream for good measure. Admission and parking are both free, it’s pet-friendly (leashes required), and the famous Hanover tomatoes are there for the buying. Come early if you want the best of the produce before it sells out.

Norfolk Taco Festival

Norfolk – July 11–12, 2026

Tilapia Tacos

Down on the coast, the Waterside District turns into a full-blown taco paradise for the Norfolk Taco Festival, billed as the biggest taco fest in Virginia. The waterfront entertainment complex fills with outdoor activations along the Elizabeth River, indoor venues, and bars built for the occasion.

Food runs on a voucher system, so you can graze your way through tacos, elotes, nachos, and more from dozens of vendors, then wash it all down with margaritas and ice-cold beer. Add live bands across multiple stages, mariachi music, taco and chili-pepper eating contests, and a kids’ fun zone, and it makes for an easy summer-weekend outing on the water. Parking downtown is limited, so rideshare or public transit is the smart move.

Purcellville Wine and Food Festival

Purcellville – July 18, 2026

For a day in Loudoun wine country, head to Dillon’s Woods for the Purcellville Wine and Food Festival. This annual celebration gathers local wineries and vineyards, breweries, eateries, and food vendors alongside artists, craft makers, live music, and other entertainment in a shady, laid-back setting.

It’s the kind of relaxed afternoon Northern Virginia does so well — sip your way through regional pours, sample from the food vendors, and settle in for live music with the woods as your backdrop. If you’re making the drive into wine country anyway, it’s worth turning the day into a slow, sip-and-stroll outing.

Chincoteague Island Blueberry Festival

Chincoteague – July 23–25, 2026

Over on the Eastern Shore, the 38th Annual Chincoteague Island Blueberry Festival is the largest fine arts and crafts event in the region — and a serious destination for anyone with a sweet tooth. Held at the Chincoteague Center, this three-day celebration leans all the way into the season’s tastiest little fruit. Craving some berries right now? Try these blueberry shortcakes!

Come hungry: alongside the artists, crafters, and non-stop live music, you’ll find fresh blueberries, blueberry pies, shortcakes, ice cream, and plenty of festival food. It also happens to be the unofficial kickoff to Pony Penning Week and the famous Chincoteague Pony Swim, so it’s a perfect anchor for a longer island getaway. Just note there’s limited parking and no pets (service animals welcome).

Virginia Cantaloupe Festival

South Boston – July 24, 2026

Round out the month in Southern Virginia at the 46th Annual Virginia Cantaloupe Festival, an evening party on the front lawn of Berry Hill Resort & Conference Center. Halifax County’s famously sweet, sun-ripened melons are the centerpiece, and they’ve been drawing crowds to “Lope Fest” since the early ’80s.

Your ticket covers Reese Farms cantaloupe, roasted corn, ice cream, and beverages, including craft and domestic beer, wine, and seltzers, with food trucks slinging everything from lobster rolls to BBQ and empanadas on the side. There’s live music to carry you through the 5-to-10 p.m. festivities, making it a fun, low-key way to spend a summer Friday night down south. (Pro tip the locals swear by: eat the ice cream with the cantaloupe.)

Planning Your Virginia Food Adventures

July is packed with events and the produce festivals in particular are tied to fruit that’s only good for a few short weeks, so the timing really does matter. Several of these are ticketed events that can sell out, so if there’s one you’re eyeing, grab tickets early and make a weekend of it.
