The Best Restaurants in Roanoke
The first time we spent a weekend in Roanoke, I was surprised at the variety and diversity of the restaurants in the area. From classic American steakhouses like Billy’s to unique international flavors at Taaza Indian Cuisine, Roanoke has a pretty wide range of options.
The weather was gorgeous on our most recent visit, so we hopped around to a few places with outdoor patios to enjoy the weather while grabbing a bite. Several restaurants in Roanoke have garnered local acclaim. For example, places like The River and Rail have been recognized for their outstanding seafood. Whether you’re looking for a fancy date night spot or a quick slice of pizza, here are some of our favorite places to eat in Roanoke!
Best Date Night Restaurants in Roanoke
Billy’s Roanoke
Billy’s Roanoke is known for its steak and seafood and offers a classic American dining experience in a historic 1912 building. Billy’s has, as the building says, “Seafood and other great stuff.”
Some can’t-miss dishes include prime rib, crab cakes, pork belly appetizer, bacon-wrapped scallops, and lobster mac and cheese. Billy’s offers lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. They also have a kids’ menu with favorites like grilled cheese, chicken tenders, and burger sliders.
Reservations aren’t required but recommended — and you can’t request specific tables or window views.

Six and Sky Rooftop Grille
With one of the best views of Roanoke, Six and Sky Rooftop Grille sits on the 6th floor atop Center in the Square. The restaurant boasts an open kitchen concept and an overall fantastic atmosphere.
At Six and Sky Rooftop Grille, the menu is perfect for a seafood lover. From the sea bass and scallops to the fish and chips, there’s something to satisfy every palate. And don’t forget to pair your meal with a glass of wine or a signature cocktail from their extensive drink menu.
While Six and Sky isn’t the cheapest restaurant on the block, they offer generous portions, and you can’t beat the location.
Finally, while reservations aren’t required, they are recommended. You can book yours here.

Bernard’s Gastropub & Eatery
Bernard’s is a local Roanoke favorite that serves some of the best braised short ribs your taste buds will meet. I recommend coming on an empty stomach because you’ll want to start with the French onion soup and end with the butterscotch banana pudding.
Chef Jon Bernard and his wife Lindsay opened the family-owned restaurant in 2018 to showcase their love of cuisine.
If you’re unsure where to start, don’t hesitate to ask your server; they are great at giving suggestions. The open-concept kitchen offers a glimpse at the magic behind the meal, which adds to the charm of this cozy restaurant.
I highly recommend making a reservation unless you don’t mind waiting a bit.

Best Family-Friendly Restaurants in Roanoke
Mama Jean’s BBQ
Mama Jean’s BBQ is more than a restaurant, it’s an experience. My number one tip is to get there early, especially since once a menu item is sold out for the day, that’s it.
It’s hard to pick favorites at Mama Jean’s and you honestly can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Some local favorites include the brisket, mac n cheese, pulled pork sandwich, double smash burger, and smoked potato salad. However, the signature dish at Mama Jean’s is a good ‘ol BBQ sandwich.
It’s best to check their Facebook before you head over to see their weekly hours and menu. Also, they only offer outside seating, so you’ll want to check the weather forecast. (Although, you can always eat it in your car; I don’t judge!)
Location: 3404 Brandon Avenue SW, Roanoke, VA
Lews Restaurant
Family-owned since 2004, Lews has two locations in Roanoke, a Hollins and a Southwest location. Lews is your place if you’re looking for an easy, quick spot to grab lunch or dinner. While the ambiance could use some work, the food delivers.
Their extensive menu includes pizza, famous subs, wings, nachos, and more. The portions are large, so you may want to share if you’re not starving. If you feel like splurging, try the fried Oreos! Your kids will thank you.
Lews offers weekly specials like All You Can Eat Spaghetti on Thursdays. You can find more specials here.

The Hatch
This quaint restaurant is located in The City Market Building. It is family-friendly and has delicious menu options. (It’s every parent’s dream restaurant!) One of the best parts is that kids can eat free from 3 pm to 6 pm, Monday through Wednesday.
The Hatch has an inviting modern and rustic atmosphere, decorated with exposed brick walls and elegant lighting fixtures. The atmosphere isn’t the only thing that receives accolades; the menu is one of the best in Roanoke.
They are known for their Southern food, especially their fried chicken. (There are chicken ‘n waffles on the kids’ menu, too!)
You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu, but top picks include Shrimp and Grits, Chicken and Dumplings, and, of course, fried chicken. Just don’t forget to bring your appetite!

The River and Rail
The River and Rail brings a Southern, New-American menu to Roanoke with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. What sets it apart from other restaurants is its daily changing menu, which features innovative twists on Southern classics.
You can call the restaurant after 4 pm for information about today’s menu. However, examples of what they offer include VA oyster wraps, steamed pei mussels, pork ribs, hanger steak, and chicken breast.
They also have delicious desserts, including brown butter cake and dark chocolate cremeux. The River and Rail staff is highly attentive, so don’t hesitate to inform them about your allergies or dietary needs.
Finally, reservations are highly recommended! Click here to make yours! They book up fast, so it’s better to make your reservation sooner rather than later.

Established in 2005, Rockfish Food and Wine is situated in the historic Grandin Village in Roanoke and offers its customers a range of seafood, chicken, and steak options. You can also choose from delectable appetizers like lamb meatballs, fried oysters, and crispy calamari.
I appreciate the large front windows welcoming you into this cozy spot on the corner of Grandin and Westover. If you save room for dessert, you can’t go wrong with the chocolate bread pudding or caramel flan cheesecake.
On Wednesdays wine lovers will appreciate 20% off in-house bottles.

Coach and Four
Coach and Four, meaning “a carriage pulled by four horses with one driver,” is a unique restaurant in a large colonial house off Williamson Road. With complimentary meatballs and an array of the finest quality beef, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
You’ll appreciate the melt-in-your-mouth prime rib paired with Pinot Noir or indulge in the bleu cheese-encrusted filet. You’re drooling, aren’t you? Same.
If you have room for dessert, try the Chocolate Creme Brulee with Godiva liqueur. You won’t be sorry. Many Roanokers are sleeping on this hot spot, so it’s time to wake up!

Frankie Rowland’s Steakhouse
Since 2021, Frankie Rowland’s Steakhouse has offered Roanoke some of the best steak and seafood the town has seen. If you’re looking for melt-in-your-mouth steak, this is your place.
You can’t go wrong with any of the steaks on the menu, but some top favorites are the Ribeye, Filet, and New York Strip.
Remember that everything is a la carte, which can add up, but it’s tough to pass on their delicious sides, like Brussels sprouts, spinach, and potatoes. If you have room for dessert, try the bread pudding. (It’s made with Krispy Kreme donuts!)
The intimate, upscale steakhouse is known for its extensive adult beverages, including hundreds of wines and liquors and 70 martinis. (Remember to drink responsibly!)
Location: 104 S Jefferson St Roanoke, VA 24011 (Dinner only/Closed Sundays)
Taaza Indian Cuisine
If you’re looking for authentic Indian food in Roanoke, look no further than Taaza Indian Cuisine. This eclectic restaurant is located in Roanoke’s historic Grandin Village and offers its customers a taste of its award-winning Indian and Mediterranean cuisine.
You don’t want to miss their Naan, freshly made in their traditional clay oven. The restaurant’s meat and veggies are also made in the clay oven. Other menu favorites include the Murgh Tikka, Butter Chicken, Lamb Kebab, and Gobi Manchurian.
So, grab your girls and have a night out enjoying some local Indian cuisine! (While they offer dine-in or takeout, they are closed on Mondays.)

Best Pizza Restaurants in Roanoke
Tony Avellino’s
If you’re looking for the best New York pizza in Roanoke, stop at family-owned Tony Avellino’s. While it doesn’t look like much from the outside (it’s the shell of a Waffle House), you’ll appreciate everything they offer on the inside.
For starters, you’ll be blown away by the craftsmanship of their dough. Some favorites are the Neapolitan-style pizza, Old World-style pizza, and cheesesteaks.
Aside from the pizza and subs, you don’t want to miss the cheesy breadsticks. Seriously. You’ll thank me later. They also have plant-based menu options, including their delicious non-dairy pizza.
The only downside to Tony Avellino’s is that it doesn’t open until 4 pm and is closed on Sundays, but we can live with those cons.

Highlander Pizza
Highlander Pizza offers specialty pizzas, including Super Supreme, Meat Lovers, Greek, and Chicken Alfredo. If you’re in the mood for simple toppings, don’t fret.
Highlander has classics like cheese, pepperoni, and veggies to appease your pizza craving. The slices are generous, so don’t forget to bring your appetite!
Pizza isn’t the only standout; they offer various calzones, subs, salads, pasta and pizza rolls. While the restaurant is in a fairly empty strip mall, don’t let the appearance deceive you.
The piping-hot food is worth a visit! Many customers choose delivery, so you won’t have difficulty finding a seat inside.
