The Best Non-Alcoholic Beers Made in Virginia
Virginia has made its mark in the craft brewing scene, and while the state is celebrated for its traditional beers, it’s also seeing growth in the non-alcoholic beverage sector. We’ve looked into the growing trend of non-alcoholic beers and found a few local breweries leading the charge in this space.
The Rise of Non-Alcoholic Beer
Non-alcoholic (NA) or low-alcohol beers have been around for decades, but have recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. Traditionally, NA beers were often seen as uninspiring and bland alternatives to their alcoholic counterparts. However, modern craft breweries have set out to change this perception by crafting NA beers rich in flavor, aroma, and complexity.
Virginia’s Craft Beer Scene
Virginia’s craft beer scene continues to grow with no sign of slowing down. The innovation and creativity in the space has finally started to spill over into the non-alcoholic beer category as brewers strive to cater to a broader audience. We’re seeing a rise in “sober curious” patrons who are cutting back on alcohol, as well as drinkers who simply want a refreshing, low-alcohol option.
While we didn’t find quite as many options as we expected, several breweries in Virginia have taken up the challenge of creating high-quality, non-alcoholic beers. Here are a few standouts:
Three Notch’d Brewery– With locations in Charlottesville, Richmond, Roanoke, and Virginia Beach, it shouldn’t be too hard to get your hands on Uncool, the non-alcoholic IPA made by Three Notch’d Brewery. They seem to be blazing the trail in the locally brewed NA beer space and this was the option most widely available. In fact, if you can’t stop by their brewery, you can snag it online!
Port City- This brewery in Alexandria, VA makes a non-alcoholic, hop-infused sparkling water called Hopwell. It has a tropical hoppy aroma and a refreshing pop of floral hop flavor. It’s perfect if you’re craving something hoppy and flavorful without the beer (or calories!) of a traditional drink.
The Veil Brewing Co. – Known for their innovative approach to brewing, The Veil has ventured into the non-alcoholic beer space with enthusiasm. Their popular Ever Calm brew is a Gose-style drink with fruit vibes.
Precarious Beer Project– This Williamsburg-based brewery developed its Day Ripper beer, which is a light and crisp non alcoholic beer. (Unfortunately, it’s not always on the menu, so keep that in mind!)
Dirt Farm Brewery– This brewery located in Bluemont, VA, released a 0% AF beer, a hoppy IPA that doesn’t skimp on flavor. It’s not always on tap, so check in with the brewery before your visit!
Unfortunately, many of these non-alcoholic beers aren’t consistently in the rotation, so it can be hard to find them. On the bright side, we’ve seen an uptick in breweries carrying other non-alcoholic options like kombucha, root beer, ginger beer, and lemonade, so we hope to continue to see a trend toward other options. If you have a recommendation for a locally brewed NA beer that isn’t on the list, let us know!
