Coco + Hazel: Over-the-Top Milkshakes and Coffee in Richmond

If you’re looking for some of the most epic desserts and coffee drinks in town, you’ve gotta check out Coco + Hazel in Richmond. Known for their over-the-top milkshakes piled high with toppings, this spot is also slinging some seriously creative coffee flights and breakfast sandwiches. Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth or just want a fun coffee shop experience, Coco + Hazel is the move.

Here’s what we tried:

The Coffee Flight
This is the first time I’ve seen a coffee flight on a menu, but it was exactly what I wanted! It was a great way to try the menu. This flight included mini-iced versions of four inventive drinks:

  • Orange Dreamsicle Latte
  • Cherries Jubilee Cold Brew
  • French Toast Chia
  • Coconut Cream Pie Latte

Even as someone who doesn’t usually go for sweet coffee drinks, I appreciated the creativity and balance of flavors. The French Toast Chia was my favorite. I have to admit I didn’t even come close to finishing this. I’d recommend sharing with a friend!

Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuit
My friend Ashley ordered this and you can’t go wrong with a classic. Soft biscuit, crispy bacon, melty cheese — it’s everything you want in a breakfast sandwich. The biscuit was a little crumbly, making it a bit hard to eat. But hey, that’s how it goes. They also serve Cupertino’s bagels, which is a nice local touch for bagel lovers.

The Dahland
I opted for their vegan housemade “chicken” salad, which was savory and satisfying, served on a soft, flour-dusted vegan roll from Two and a Half Irishmen. The bread was a little doughy but the salad had a great flavor. This is a nice option if you’re looking for a plant-based breakfast sandwich!

Chocolate Blackout Milkshake
This was the showstopper. This thick chocolate milkshake is served in a cup rimmed with chocolate sauce and sprinkles, topped with whipped cream, more chocolate sauce, a cherry, and — wait for it — a housemade brownie. It’s indulgent in all the best ways. The brownie was perfectly fudgy, and yes, I dipped it into the shake because I believe in living your best dessert life. This was actually the “mini” size which easily fed the two of us. You can get the regular size which would be great for sharing with a group!

The shop itself is super cute. It’s the kind of place you visit for a treat and end up staying longer than expected because you’re enjoying the atmosphere (and possibly recovering from a sugar rush). They have quite a bit of seating for a coffee shop, so it would be a great place to meet friends.

Of everything we tried, the Chocolate Blackout Milkshake was our favorite, but the whole experience was fun and I liked that their menu had a ton of creative options. Whether you’re looking for a cocktail or a coffee, this place is definitely worth a visit!
