The Best Coffee Shops in Virginia Beach

Whether you’re craving a cup of pour-over coffee or you’re looking for a fancy blended drink with lunch, we’ve got the list of the best places to grab a coffee in Virginia Beach!

It was a little challenging to narrow down the list of the best coffee shops in Virginia Beach because there are so many great places. We tried to put together a list that has a variety of options, from a family-friendly lunch spot to the place to go for a perfectly roasted bag of beans. Whether you’re looking for an iced coffee, an American brew, or a coffee flight, these local shops have unique, wonderful characteristics. I’ll point out that none of these are oceanfront coffee shops, but many of them are just a few blocks from the boardwalk, and we think it’s worth the short trip to visit a locally-owned coffee shop. Ready for a good cup of coffee? Here are the best cafes to visit!

Three Ships Coffee Roasters

This popular spot actually has three different locations, two in Virginia Beach and one in Norfolk. From single-origin coffee to flavorful blends, this is the place to go if you’re a coffee bean aficionado. But even if you’re not a black coffee purist, they have plenty of specialty drinks available to get your caffeine fix.  Their food menu is on the smaller side, but they do typically have some pastry options available. This is my personal favorite of the local coffee shops. I like to grab a bag of beans to go so I can brew their coffee at home, too!

Fathom Coffee

We love the vibe of this coffee shop because their passion for coffee and brewing comes through in every cup! You can even purchase coffee brewing supplies on site at their cafe. This family owned spot has been up and running since 2016 and their friendly staff is always ready to answer your coffee questions. They have a few snacks available but the food options are a bit limited. They occasionally host coffee tasting events so keep your eyes peeled for those! It’s a great way to learn more about how the beans are roasted and what makes a great cup of coffee.

Roast Rider Coffee

This place has a variety of coffee styles, from classic brews to espresso drinks, so you can definitely find something on the menu you like. This is the perfect place to get a cold brew coffee, especially during the summer. Their cafe serves meze platters that are perfect for sharing and their pizzas are a great lunch option. They also have a full menu of coffee-infused cocktails daily, which is a fun twist on your typical coffee shop menu.

Commune

We love that Commune is all about local food and sustainability. They’re technically a full-service restaurant, not just a coffee house, but we had to put them on the list, especially since they serve locally roasted coffee from Pin Up Coffee. They also partner with local farms and producers, which we love! They have plenty of vegan options and their delicious coffee drinks are a must try. They have two locations, one in Virginia Beach and one in Norfolk.

Java Surf Café & Espresso

This beachside cafe combines the love for coffee with surfer vibes, creating a fun and unique atmosphere. Beyond serving exceptional coffee, Java Surf offers breakfast & lunch items — so come hungry! This is one of the larger coffee shops so it would be a good place to come with family and friends. Order some coffee, grab some amazing food, and enjoy the beach-themed cafe.
